Energy performance

The process of designing buildings that can deliver against demanding energy performance targets, including net zero definitions including LETI EUI’s or NABERS UK star ratings, is greatly supported by quality modelling throughout the process.

We offer dynamic thermal modelling skills and services that can inform and optimise the design process from concept design through to detailed design, commissioning and post-completion optimisation.

Assessing thermal comfort and overheating risk

Inkling have a strong reputation for providing advice around predicting and mitigating overheating risk.

For domestic buildings this includes early stage advice and CIBSE TM59 analyses, and now assessing compliance against Approved Document O within Building Regulations.

We model all aspects of thermal performance for both dwellings and commercial buildings, heating and cooling load calculations and plant sizing.

Many of our DSM consultancy projects also include modelling natural ventilation, for example to including the effect of wind and stack-driven ventilation on overheating risk in naturally ventilated or mixed-mode buildings.

NABERS UK Independent Design Review (IDR) services

Claire is one of the first cohort to be qualified members of the NABERS UK Independent Design Review Panel. The Panel currently consists of 11 industry experts in both the energy efficient design and operation of office buildings.

The role involves upskilling the commercial real estate sector to reliably deliver energy efficient buildings and finally close the building performance gap in the UK. The scheme will ensure that buildings perform as designed, supporting the delivery of comfortable, energy efficient buildings.

Energy and plant modelling

Using Commercial DSM packages we carry out energy modelling at the design stage in order to predict loads, energy use or energy bills once a building is occupied. We use the CIBSE TM54 (2022) ‘in-use energy prediction’ methodology in order to clearly present the likely ranges of results and to explain uncertainties in the predictions.

We are able to include more or less detail depending on the design stage and information available and, where necessary, we include bespoke plant models in order to incorporate important features of the design. This enables the performance of plant components to be included in more detail and for control algorithms to be defined.
