NABERS UK - Inkling

We offer a comprehensive NABERS UK Independent Design Review (IDR) service.

NABERS UK Design for Performance (DfP) was launched in the UK in November 2020, having run successfully in Australia since 1998, reducing the energy usage of Australian offices by an average of 42%.

NABERS DfP involves a developer or owner committing to design, build and commission a new office development or major office refurbishment to achieve a specific NABERS UK Energy rating. It offers a clear framework for alignment of office performance with design aspirations.

The design-stage Independent Design Review (IDR) assessment is an in-depth review of the design information and modelling report. This provides a vital check that the NABERS UK requirements are being met and that the star rating targeted is justified. The review must be carried out by an IDR Panel member who will give feedback on a variety of elements and comment on any risk factors that may affect the ability of the building to meet its star rating in operation. As well as technical aspects of the design, the review covers non-technical barriers which pose a risk to the rating, such as the management of design changes, maintenance and tenant fit outs.

The NABERS rating is ultimately verified on site from meter readings. NABERS UK is pivotal in enabling buildings that perform as designed, supporting the delivery of comfortable, energy efficient buildings.

Claire is a founder member of the NABERS UK Independent Design Review Panel and has been involved with NABERS since its introduction to the UK.

We recommended that a NABERS Design Review Panel member is engaged at an early stage; we suggest a Stage 3 pre-IDR review, with even earlier involvement if possible. This enables:

The opportunity to identify developing NABERS UK risks and opportunities to inform decision making and optimise the building NABERS rating.
Costs related to later design changes to be avoided while the commercial benefits of the NABERS rating can be realised. The formal IDR would then be carried out based on the Stage 4 information.
